Sometimes you take it with you
Sunrise on the island of Kauai.
7:00 AM local time, although I’ve been awake since 5:30, when I was roused from sleep by a text from one of my sisters. Another sister is getting out of the hospital after being admitted for a blood sugar level in the 600 range. The physicians were able to bring her level down slowly to a reasonable score, but she definitely now has diabetes. She’s 76 years old.
If you’re wondering about me getting a text so early, it’s because my family back in the mid-west doesn’t know where I am. Hawai’i is 4 time zones behind the mid-west.
Hawaii is my happy place. I’d rather be here than anywhere else on earth. It feels like home. I’ve come here, probably for the last time, to try to get my head screwed on straight, but I don’t think a week is going to cut it. I fly home Tuesday to the same situation I left. A wife recovering from a fall that broke her hip.
My step daughter was nice enough to come and take care of her mother so I could have some time off as caregiver.

Does the step-daughter know how you have really been feeling about your marriage, Jack? If not, I think the three of you need to sit down and brainstorm (with counseling or a social worker) how best you all can continue without the outcome getting any worse for any of you. My heart breaks for all of you.
Oh dear. Who is with her now?
